Description

Here's another entry for :iconitsawonderfulworld:'s 100-theme challenge. This is 61, Fairy Tale.

The story that inspired this picture is the Greek legend of Apollo (the god of the sun, music and medicine), Hyacinthus (a prince from Sparta) and Zephyros (the god of the gentle west wind and the season of spring). In my retelling of the classic, Joshua is Zephyros, Hanekoma is Apollo and Neku is Hyacinthus.

In the literary myth, Hyacinthus was a beautiful young man and lover of the god Apollo, though he was also admired by Zephyros.

One afternoon Apollo and Hyacinthus took turns throwing a discus. Hyacinth ran to catch it to impress Apollo; however, he was struck and killed by the discus as it fell to the ground. A twist in the tale makes the wind god Zephyros responsible for the death of Hyacinthus; the young man's beauty caused a feud between Zephyros and Apollo. Jealous that Hyacinthus preferred the Apollo, Zephyros blew Apollo's discus off course, so as to injure and kill Hyacinthus. When he died, Apollo made a flower - the hyacinth - from his spilled blood.

I love 1970s shounen-ai drawn in the shoujo way with flowers, borders, sparkles, big hair, you name it. And Keiko Takemiya's art is just MAGNIFICENT; her work has very much influenced me, especially her masterpiece "Kaze To Ki no Uta". Joshua has always looked like he belongs in a shoujo shonen-ai to me, especially if he applied false eyelashes and lipstick. XD Which is why I love drawing him in such a way.

I wanted this picture to look extremely serene with nuances of the warm spring. The hyacinths, of course, reflect the legend of Hyacinthus; the grapes represent Zephyros' association with the unripe fruit of spring. The bird is a wood warbler, a songbird found in Greece.

I used some new painting techniques for this, namely a wet-edged brush tool. I was going to add a watercolor paper texture to the background but thought twice about it, as the texturing could detract from the drawing's more minute details.

Pencil finished in CS2 with Wacom.
